It is the same puzzle every year. They have spent whole evenings building, they know every new release before anyone else, and you no longer dare buy them a set in case they already have it. Yet there is one thing almost every brick fan is short of: space to display what they have built.
A LEGO® compatible wall shelf made to the exact size of their favourite build is a gift they could not have picked up in a shop themselves. Here is how to give one without ruining the surprise, and when to order so it arrives before Christmas.
Why a shelf rather than one more set
Adult brick collectors tend to share the same problem: finished builds pile up on a chest of drawers, gather dust and sometimes end up taken apart in a box for lack of room. Giving a shelf means giving a showcase to something that took them hours to build.
It is also a gift that cannot be a duplicate. Nobody already owns a shelf cut for that particular set, on that particular wall. And unlike an off-the-shelf unit designed for books, it is sized for the build it will hold.
The real challenge: getting the measurements without raising suspicion
A made-to-measure shelf needs measurements. That is where the gift gets tricky, and there are three ways around it.
Give the set and the shelf together
This is the easiest route. You buy the set they have been waiting for and order the shelf to its size. The dimensions of the finished model are usually printed on the box or listed on the manufacturer's product page, so you have everything you need without measuring anything. On the day, they unwrap the build and the spot to display it.
Quietly measure a set they have already built
If you are thinking of a set they already own, wait until they are out and take two measurements: the length and depth of its footprint, base included, taking in anything that sticks out. You do not need the height of the build: the shelf holds the set, it does not enclose it.
Check the set fits within the limits
Before ordering, one thing to confirm. The usable surface of the shelf, meaning the inner area the build sits on, ranges from 50 to 300 mm in length and 50 to 200 mm in width. The configurator also offers a rear clearance adjustable from 5 to 100 mm. If the set's footprint fits within 30 × 20 cm, you are fine. Choosing the options for someone else
When you order for yourself, you know where the shelf will go. For a gift, some choices are safer than others.
Colour: stay neutral
The shelf comes in black, white, brown and bright colours. If you do not know the room it will hang in, black or white are the safest bets: they step back behind the build and suit most walls. Keep the bright colours for when you know they will pick up a shade from the set or the room.
Mounting: think about where it will end up
Two systems are available. Screws and wall plugs, for concrete, brick or plasterboard, are included in the base price, screw covers too. The wooden rail attachment (+€3.50) lets the shelf be moved without drilling new holes. The rail is a simple wooden batten fixed to the wall, which the shelf hooks onto. For a renter, or someone who likes to rearrange their collection, it is the option that leaves the most freedom.
Strength: what it can hold
The outer shell of the shelf is PLA+, an enhanced version of PLA, the plant-based plastic most widely used in 3D printing. The internal reinforcements are PETG, a plastic that copes better with mechanical stress. Diagonal supports are calculated automatically from the dimensions, and built-in safety lips keep things from falling off. The shelf holds up to 2 to 3 kg depending on its size, so check that the set you have in mind stays within that range.
Ordering in time for Christmas
This is where most made-to-measure gifts go wrong. Every shelf is made to order in our workshop in Vatimont, Moselle, and the stated lead times are 5 to 7 working days of production, plus 2 to 3 days of delivery within mainland France. Working days run Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays.
All in all, allow up to around ten working days between ordering and delivery. For a delivery in mainland France by Thursday 24 December, that puts the cut-off around Thursday 10 December. Our advice: order in late November or the very first days of December. You keep some room for a measuring mistake, and you are not relying on carriers during the busiest week of the year.
We also ship across Europe. If the shelf is heading outside mainland France, give yourself an even wider margin.
What to budget
The shelf starts at €21. As an example, a 50 × 50 mm shelf in black with screws and wall plugs comes to €30.25 including VAT. The price changes with the size and options, and the configurator updates it live with every adjustment. Shipping is calculated at checkout.
Frequently asked questions
What if I get the measurements wrong?
Double-check the set's footprint, base included, before confirming, and leave a little margin on each side. That is another reason to order early: a mistake spotted in late November can be fixed, one spotted on 20 December much less so.
Does it need a particular kind of wall?

Can I give several shelves to build a display wall?
Yes, each shelf is configured separately. It is a good idea for a fan who displays several builds: sizes matched to each set make for a more coherent wall than a row of identical shelves.
