Rapid prototyping: test your idea in 3D printing without buying a machine

You have an idea for a part: a bracket that exists nowhere, an enclosure for your electronics project, a fixing that is missing from a piece of furniture. On the screen of your modelling software, everything looks right. Then comes the question that stops everything: does it actually fit, once the part is in your hand? A printed prototype answers that within days, and you don't need to buy a printer to get one.

A prototype answers questions a screen never asks

A 3D model on a screen misleads you on three points, always the same ones.

Perceived size first. A part looks generous in a modelling window and turns out tiny on the table, until you put it next to the object it is meant for.

Ergonomics next. Grip, access to a button, the angle of a stand: none of those sensations can be simulated. They are felt.

Fit last, meaning the way your part mates with everything around it. Clearance, the gap deliberately left between two parts so they assemble without forcing, is set in tenths of a millimetre and checked for real. It is by far the number one reason there is a second version.

Be clear-eyed about what a prototype won't tell you, though: how the part behaves after months of use is something only time reveals. It validates geometry, assembly and immediate use, which is already most of what sinks a project.

Why buying a printer isn't the right first step

The temptation makes sense: if you're going to iterate, you may as well have the machine at home. Except that between the idea and the first decent part, you're not just buying a printer: you're buying the spools, the space, the calibration hours and the learning curve, before you even know whether your idea stands up.

Having the first two or three versions printed on demand reverses the order: you validate the project first, then invest, knowing what you need. Three versions beat one perfect version

The classic mistake is trying to produce the final part first time, piling detail into the file before printing anything at all. Rapid prototyping works the other way round.

Version 1: the shape

You print the bare geometry, no finishing, no cosmetic detail, in PLA, the standard plastic that suits decorative items, figurines and anything living indoors. The goal is to hold the object, measure it, put it next to its real support. Nine times out of ten this part goes in the bin after ten minutes of examination, and it has done its job.

Version 2: the fit

You correct the file with what version 1 revealed: clearance to adjust, a wall thickness to revisit, a fillet to add. The tip that changes everything for your budget: at this stage there is often no point reprinting the whole part. Isolate the critical area, the mating feature, the fixing, the cable route, and have that fragment printed on its own.

Version 3: the final material

Once the geometry is validated, you reprint the complete part in the plastic it really deserves. This is also the moment for finishing: sanding and primer, the undercoat that evens out the surface before painting, hand painting, matt, satin or gloss varnish, simple assembly if your model allows for magnets, screws or inserts.

Choosing the material for each stage

On a shape prototype, PLA is almost always enough and it is the most economical: material starts at 22 €/kg. As soon as the part has to take mechanical stress or repeated handling, PETG (26 €/kg) becomes the usual choice. TPU (35 €/kg), which is flexible, covers anything that has to deform: seals, protective covers, grips. Nylon (65 €/kg) handles the most demanding technical needs.

What one iteration loop costs

A quote rests on two items: the material, charged by the kilo depending on the plastic chosen, and machine time at 7 €/h. As an order of magnitude, a small part starts around 15 €, a medium part sits between 40 and 50 €, a large or technical part goes beyond 120 €.

On timings: free quote within 24 hours, production starts within 12 hours of acceptance and payment, Monday to Friday from 9am to 7pm, then 3 to 5 working days of production depending on complexity and workshop load. Tracked delivery in mainland France starts at 6,90 €, and collection from the workshop in Vatimont, in the Moselle, is free. If you don't have a file yet

When your model is ready, send it as STL, OBJ or 3MF, as a direct file or a link. Your files are never shared or reused without your agreement, and you remain responsible for the rights to whatever you send us, whether it is your own modelling or a model bought elsewhere.

There is no number to give: it depends on the complexity of the part and the precision of your modelling. Remember the reflex rather than the count: a deliberately simple first version, then targeted corrections.
