3D printing cost: understanding your quote

First time asking for an on-demand 3D printing quote: the part looks simple, the file weighs almost nothing, and yet the price you are quoted varies by a factor of three from one provider to the next. Nothing unusual there. The cost of a 3D print is not a matter of "how heavy the file is", and understanding what actually moves a quote saves you from both overpaying and unfairly suspecting a provider who is being perfectly straight with you.

This guide lays out the real levers behind an on-demand 3D printing quote. No bogus per-gram rate, no 24-hour promise that doesn't hold. The principles, the ballparks, the questions worth asking, and the optimizations that genuinely save you money.

Why a 3D printing quote is never "by the kilo"

An on-demand 3D printing service doesn't sell you a volume of material. It sells a combination of material, machine time, human time and risk. That combination is why two parts of identical weight can be billed three times apart.

A 30-gram part with a simple design, printed in standard PLA alongside twelve similar parts on the same plate, takes almost no human time and a few hours of machine time. The same 30 grams of material in a complex part, with print supports and hand finishing, can tie up the machine for half a day and need 20 minutes of cleanup. Priced "per gram", the second case would be undercharged and the first overcharged. Most serious services therefore think in terms of total occupancy time, not raw weight.

That has a practical consequence for you: a poorly optimized file, badly oriented or with needlessly complex geometry, quickly costs more than the part should. The good news is that this is exactly where you can act to bring the price down.

The six levers that move your quote

The volume of material used

Part volume is still the first factor. And it isn't just the visible volume: inside the part, the infill can range from 15% to 100% depending on the mechanical load expected. A part that acts as a decorative stand is perfectly fine at 15% infill. A part that has to take a screw or survive knocks will climb to 40 or 60%. That can double the amount of material printed, and with it the material cost.

Then come support structures: any steep overhang needs print supports, and those are printed in material too. They end up in the bin after printing, but they are very much counted.

The material you choose

Not all filaments cost the same to buy. Standard PLA is the most affordable, PETG sits slightly above, and wood PLA and technical materials (PETG-CF, ABS, TPU, nylon) are noticeably more expensive. Worth noting: a "special" filament (rare color, metallic finish, fluorescent, translucent and so on) may be billed separately from basic PLA, even within the same service. If you have no constraint on the shade, saying "black or white PLA, whatever you have" saves you money on the quote.

Machine time

Actual print time depends on volume, but also on the layer height chosen. A fine layer (0.12 mm) gives a detailed result but doubles print time compared with a standard layer (0.20 mm). For a hidden technical part, standard layers are plenty. For a visible, decorative part, fine layers are justified.

Some services bill "machine occupancy" per hour block. That is legitimate: a printer running a full day on your part cannot make anything else in parallel. It is also why a single large part sometimes costs more per gram than a batch of small ones.

Finish and post-processing

A part straight off the printer doesn't look like one that has been sanded, smoothed, painted or varnished. If you need a clean, ready-to-use part (a clip, an organizer, a functional bracket), the raw output is more than enough and adds nothing to the quote.

If you are after a carefully finished look (visible decor, a gift, a client prototype), sanding, filling the layer lines, painting or varnishing all add human time. That time is billed. It is often what surprises people in a quote, and it is also the line item where negotiating pays off most: "I'll take the raw finish" can cut the final price by 20 to 40%.

The quantity produced

3D printing inverts the logic of plastic injection molding. On a large injected run, the mold is expensive but each part becomes almost free. In 3D printing there is no mold to amortize, so the unit price falls far less steeply with quantity.

That said, the drop is real: across ten identical parts printed at once, preparation time is shared, the machine is better used, and the unit price comes down. It is marginal on runs of 3 to 5 parts, significant beyond 20. 3D printing still remains the most relevant option up to a few hundred parts, beyond which other processes become competitive.

Lead time and urgency

The standard lead time for an on-demand 3D printing service runs to one or two weeks depending on workload, outside peak periods. That is the lead time the base price reflects.

An express turnaround (within 5 to 7 days) means bumping your order ahead of others, and therefore a surcharge. Asking for production in 48 hours on a part that needs 8 hours of machine time to begin with, plus post-processing, is technically feasible but it displaces other customers, and the surcharge reflects that cost. When your need isn't urgent, saying so explicitly ("no rush, fit it into the schedule") can sometimes shave a few euros off the quote.

What does not really move the price

Three misconceptions are worth clearing up before any quote.

Visual complexity is not, in itself, a price factor. A part covered in engraved patterns or complex curves is no more expensive than a smooth part of the same volume. The 3D printer follows the file, whatever it looks like. What costs money is the supports that complexity may require, not the complexity itself.

The size of the 3D file (in megabytes) has no influence on price. A 200 MB STL and a 2 MB STL representing the same part will produce the same quote. What matters is the geometry, not the file's digital weight.

The number of colors requested isn't always penalized. A single-color print is the simplest, but a two-tone print (a logo in a different shade, say) is sometimes doable without a major surcharge. Three colors or more, then yes, the price climbs, because it means two or three separate prints and an assembly step.

The ballparks worth knowing before you ask for a quote

Rather than precise figures that depend on the market and the provider, here are the orders of magnitude that shape a realistic budget:

  • Small simple part (clip, end cap, light bracket): the quote lands in an accessible range, comparable to a small piece of hardware. This is the natural territory of on-demand 3D printing for private customers.
  • Medium functional part (console stand, organizer, modest wall shelf): the quote works out roughly like an equivalent branded accessory in a shop, sometimes less, with the advantage of being made to measure.
  • Large technical part or elaborate decorative piece: quotes climb fast because machine time stretches out. Think in days of occupancy rather than hours.
  • Small batch (5 to 20 identical parts): a unit price that comes down gradually compared with a one-off, without reaching injection-molded territory.

How to optimize your price without sacrificing quality

Four simple habits melt 20 to 40% off a quote without changing anything about the final result for your use case.

Accept the raw machine output if the part isn't on show. Sanding and painting are heavy line items. For a clip behind a cabinet or a drawer organizer, nobody is going to inspect it up close.

Choose the material strictly suited to the use, not "just in case". Standard PLA covers 80% of indoor accessories. Save PETG for parts that genuinely need it (outdoors, repeated mechanical stress, heat, moisture).

Lower the infill when the part carries no serious mechanical load. 15 to 20% infill is enough for most brackets and decorative pieces. Asking for 60% "to be safe" on a part that holds nothing doubles the material used for no real benefit.

Pool your needs. If you know you'll want three different parts over the coming weeks, ordering them together can lower the cost by sharing preparation time.

Asking for a quote: what to include to save time

A good quote takes minutes if you supply the right elements first time. Four pieces of information cover 90% of cases:

  1. The 3D file (STL, STEP, OBJ) if you have one. Otherwise, a dimensioned sketch or photos with the key measurements noted is often enough to get started.
  2. What the part is for. No need to be technical: "a stand for my Switch controller, sitting on my desk" already tells us everything about material and finish.
  3. The quantity you want. A single part, a small batch, a test before production? That changes how we optimize.
  4. Your target lead time, or how flexible you are. "No rush" is genuine information, and it helps slot your order into the schedule without a surcharge.

You don't need to know the material, the layer height or the infill percentage before asking for a quote. Advising you on the right combination based on the intended use is precisely the provider's job. If your project is less a one-off part than a small batch of plastic spare parts or a laser cutting and engraving job, roughly the same quoting logic applies.

In short: where to focus

The cost of an on-demand 3D print is no mystery. It is a combination of variables, and you control some of them. Volume and material set the floor; finish, urgency and quantity then move the quote, sometimes considerably. Getting a handle on those levers is what takes you from "how much for a 3D print?" to a precise request that earns a relevant quote within hours.
