You have a 3D file and a part you need printed. Two options are open to you: an online platform that returns a price in a few seconds, or a workshop that gets back to you the same day. On paper the promise is identical, you send a model and you receive an object. In practice, what happens in between has nothing in common. Here is what going through a human-sized workshop really changes, without the caricature.
Let's start with what doesn't change
Let's be upfront about it: the physics is the same everywhere. FDM, meaning fused filament deposition, where the object is built layer by layer from a melted plastic thread, lays down the same plastic in the same way whether the machine runs in the Moselle or on the other side of Europe. A local workshop doesn't print some magical PLA. If a supplier sells you proximity as a guarantee of technical quality in itself, that argument is hollow.
So the difference isn't in the machine. It's in everything that happens before and after it.
Before printing: someone actually opens your file
An automatic quote reads a volume and an estimated duration, then multiplies. It never asks what your part is for.
With us, your STL, OBJ or 3MF file gets opened and looked at before it gets priced. Is the geometry printable as it stands? Which orientation will give the best finish and the best strength? And above all: which material matches the use you describe? That is where most failed projects are decided. A decorative part and a part that has to take real loads don't call for the same material: PLA for décor and figurines, PETG when mechanical strength is needed, TPU for a flexible part, Nylon for technical uses. A five minute question up front beats a part you have to print twice.
It also happens that we tell you 3D printing isn't the right answer at all, and that your project is really a job for laser cutting and engraving or for resin printing. A form will never tell you that.
The quote: a number, or a number explained
Our quote is free and reaches you within 24 hours. It breaks down material, machine time and any finishing work, with no mystery line. The orders of magnitude are public: material starts at 22 €/kg for PLA, 26 €/kg for PETG, 35 €/kg for TPU and 65 €/kg for Nylon, and machine time is 7 €/h. A small part starts around 15 €, a medium part sits around 40 to 50 €, a large technical part starts from 120 €. The point isn't to be cheaper on principle, it's that you can discuss the quote. One finish fewer, a different material, a revised orientation: those are levers you can only pull by talking to someone.
After the machine: the maker's hand
A finished print is not a finished part. Every object that comes off a machine passes through our hands: removal of the print supports, those temporary props printed under overhanging areas and cleared away once the part is done, then checks on surfaces, details and fit. A part we're not happy with doesn't ship, it gets reprinted.
Then comes the finishing, if your quote includes it: sanding, then primer, an undercoat that evens out the surface before colour goes on, hand painting, matte, satin or gloss varnish, and simple assembly with magnets, screws or inserts where the model provides for them. From a single part, with no minimum order
Plenty of industrial players only become interesting above a certain volume. We work from 1 part, with no minimum order, and discounts on identical copies. A one-off keyring has as much of a place in the workshop as a run of thirty brackets for a local club.
In practice, as soon as you accept the quote and complete payment, your part enters production within 12 hours, Monday to Friday, 9am to 7pm. Then allow 3 to 5 working days of production depending on complexity and workshop load.
Your files stay yours
This is a point private customers overlook and creators check first: your files are never shared or reused without your agreement. On a product prototype or a personal creation, that is no small thing.

When a platform is still the right call
An honest workshop will tell you this too: our model isn't meant to cover every case. If you need several thousand identical parts, the process itself is no longer the right one, and the question becomes industrial rather than geographical. If your part demands a very specific material we don't work with, you're better off with a workshop equipped for it, wherever it may be. For the vast majority of one-off projects, repairs and small runs, though, having someone who actually answers changes the end result.
